The Ways and Means Committee handled H.R.8731, H.R.8737 bills on Aug. 19, according to the US Congress.

Bill H.R.8731 titled “To amend chapter 110 of title 18, United States Code, to prohibit gender affirming care on minors, and for other purposes” was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary and in addition to the Committees on Ways and Means Energy and Commerce and Education and Labor for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned by the House of Representatives. Bill H.R.8737 titled “To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to deny deductions for marketing related to the extraction, distribution, or consumption of fossil fuels” was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Katie Porter with Raúl Grijalva as cosponsor.

A 2019 report from the Brookings Institute argued committees aren’t capable of delving fully into the issues they address and are forced to rely on lobbyists.
