Ways and Means Committee and the bills it addressed on Aug. 23

The Ways and Means Committee handled H.R.8741, H.R.8742 bills on Aug. 23, according to the US Congress.

Bill H.R.8741 titled “To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to impose a tax on the total revenue of manufacturers and importers of semi-automatic assault weapons” was referred to the Committee on Ways and Means and in addition to the Committee on the Judiciary for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Carolyn Maloney.

Bill H.R.8742 titled “To ensure that employees of the Internal Revenue Service are brought back to their offices until the backlog of 2020 tax returns has been eliminated” was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Daniel Meuser with Byron Donalds, Andrew Garbarino, Randy Weber as cosponsors.

The Ways and Means Committee moves forward in some way on one bill per day.

Most bills have a hearing where those involved explain why they are for or against the bill. Roughly 8,000 bills are addressed by committees each year but only about 800 make it to the floor of Congress, according to ushistory.org.

A 2019 report from the Brookings Institute argued committees aren’t capable of delving fully into the issues they address and are forced to rely on lobbyists.
