Ways and Means Committee and the bills it addressed on Aug. 30

Bill H.R.8757 titled “To express the Sense of Congress relating to the United States-India Defense Partnership” was referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs and in addition to the Committees on Ways and Means Financial Services Oversight and Reform and the Judiciary for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Ro Khanna with David Schweikert, Brad Sherman as cosponsors.

Bill H.R.8759 titled “Bureaucrats to the Border Act” was referred to the Committee on Ways and Means and in addition to the Committees on Homeland Security and the Judiciary for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Barry Moore with Jake Ellzey, Jody Hice, Markwayne Mullin, Randy Weber as cosponsors.

Bill H.R.8762 titled “To restrict the possession, use, and acquisition of firearms and ammunition by the Internal Revenue Service” was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Ralph Norman.

The Ways and Means Committee moves forward in some way on one bill per day.

Most bills have a hearing where those involved explain why they are for or against the bill. Roughly 8,000 bills are addressed by committees each year but only about 800 make it to the floor of Congress, according to ushistory.org.

A 2019 report from the Brookings Institute argued committees aren’t capable of delving fully into the issues they address and are forced to rely on lobbyists.
