Sept. 6: bills handled by Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee

The Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee handled S.4790, S.Res.752 bills on Sept. 6, according to the US Congress.

Bill S.4790 titled “A bill to increase funding for the Patient Navigator Research Program of the National Cancer Institute” was read twice and referred to the Committee on Health Education Labor and Pensions by the Senate. The bill is sponsored by Sen. John Kennedy.

Bill S.Res.752 titled “A resolution commemorating the 48th anniversary of the signing into law of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, recognizing the importance the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 plays in protecting the interests of participants in employee benefit plans and their beneficiaries, and recognizing the need to encourage more workers to participate in such plans to save for their retirement”. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Patty Murray.

The Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee moves forward in some way on one bill per day.

Most bills have a hearing where those involved explain why they are for or against the bill. Roughly 8,000 bills are addressed by committees each year but only about 800 make it to the floor of Congress, according to ushistory.org.

A 2019 report from the Brookings Institute argued committees aren’t capable of delving fully into the issues they address and are forced to rely on lobbyists.
