TRINIDAD, Calif - In cooperation with the Humboldt Amateur Radio Club, the Bureau of Land Management Arcata Field Office will celebrate International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend with a free open house at the historic Trinidad Lighthouse on Trinidad Head, Sunday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Members of the radio club will set up a portable ham radio station at the lighthouse for public demonstrations. Other similar clubs around the world will also be setting up stations at their local lighthouses, as far away as Australia. Local operators will attempt to contact sites around the world via shortwave, digital and satellite operations.
At noon local operator Anthony Wiese will give a short talk about the capability and importance of ham radio.
Participants should park at Trinidad State Beach and hike the half-mile paved trail to the lighthouse. There will be no vehicle access.
The 145-year-old lighthouse was transferred from the U. S. Coast Guard into public ownership and BLM management in 2014. The BLM has been managing the facility in coordination with the Trinidad Museum Society, City of Trinidad, Trinidad Rancheria and the Yurok Tribe. It continues to operate as a navigational beacon.
