The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) today named Howard M. Cantor, a career public servant, to lead its National Operations Center (NOC) at the Denver Federal Center in Lakewood, Colo., which serves as the business hub for the agency’s many mission-focused operations in administering public lands.
Most recently, Cantor served for 3 years as the Deputy Regional Administrator for Region 8 of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), based in Denver, where he helped lead a staff of 500 Federal employees and 100 contractors. Prior to that, he served as director the EPA’s National Enforcement Investigations Center in Denver.
“Howard’s many years of high-level leadership experience, as well as his proven track record managing complex organizations, make him especially well suited to lead the National Operations Center," BLM Director Neil Kornze said.
Cantor begins his new position at the NOC on January 9, 2017. The NOC’s 550 employees and contractors contribute significantly to the BLM’s multiple-use and sustained yield mission by providing operational and technical support in several key areas, including human resources, information technology, geospatial services, finance, and acquisition.
Cantor has a bachelor’s of arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s in public and environmental affairs from Indiana University. He lives in Denver with his wife and volunteers as a Reading Partners tutor at a local elementary school and as a Big Brother mentor.
