Salem, Ore. - Visitors will have limited access to several popular recreation sites in the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Northwest Oregon District this spring while weakened trees are removed for public safety. No access will be available at Wildwood Recreation Area near Welches, OR on March 8-9, 2017 and at Fishermen's Bend Recreation Area near Mill City, OR on March 12-14. These dates are subject to change.
Cutting and removing hazardous trees and limbs, which are typically already dead or weakened by disease, is needed to protect the visitors and facilities at recreation sites. The felled trees are made available as firewood for purchase by visitors, or left to provide ecological benefits on the landscape and in nearby stream restoration projects.
Additional hazard tree removal is planned for the Alsea Falls Recreation Area, Nestucca and Whittaker Campgrounds, and the West Eugene Wetlands, which may limit visitor access later this spring.
Areas where work is being completed will be signed. "Please obey the instructions on the warning signs, and directions given by BLM staff who are present to ensure your safety and the safety of others," said Jeff McCusker, Recreation Supervisor for the Northwest Oregon District. "Please help us keep these recreation sites beautiful, green, healthy and safe."
