Bobcat–Houlihan Recreation Area Inundated by Mud; Site Remains Open

The following press releases was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management on July 17, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

CODY, Wyo. - The BLM Bobcat-Houlihan Recreation Area, located 28 miles southwest of Cody along the South Fork Highway (State Hwy. 291), was recently buried in up to 8" of mud and debris by a flash flood and culvert failure in an irrigation ditch.

Areas affected include County Road 6EH southwest of the bridge spanning the South Fork of the Shoshone River, the entire parking area, the access trail to the picnic area, the picnic area, and the access trail leading to the South Fork.

The dried mud is able to support vehicle traffic, allowing the area to remain open to the public. However, even small amounts of rain will make the area impassable. Those parking on dried mud in the morning could return from a hike to find vehicles mired in mud after a short rain shower.

BLM Outdoor Recreation Planner Paul Rau advises, “Please be watchful of the weather and where you park so that you don't get stuck in the mud."

Road work to replace some culverts along County Road 6EH is needed and is anticipated to begin soon. Please exercise caution in construction areas.
