LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Starting on Nov. 28, the Bureau of Land Management Las Cruces District staff will begin repairing the access road to Picacho Peak Recreation Area, northwest of Las Cruces. The BLM anticipates it may take up to two weeks to repair the road, which was damaged from this year’s monsoon rains. Until the work is completed, the Picacho Peak trailhead and picnic areas will be closed for public use. This work is in line with the BLM’s efforts to be a good neighbor to the communities that we serve.
The BLM will transport the heavy equipment and road repair material to the Picacho Peak access road via the Las Cruces Airport Road, avoiding the Picacho Hills residential community. Once everything is in place, the BLM will begin installing erosion control structures on some of the major arroyos and crossing areas, as well as grading and adding fine gravel to the access road.
The Picacho Peak Recreation Area has more than 15 miles of hiking trails. The 1.5-mile trail to the 4,959-foot high peak provides spectacular views of the Mesilla Valley and the Organ Mountains. Although most of the recreational use occurs on the Peak, there are also large canyons and mesa tops to explore.
