(Billings, Mont.) - Personal use Christmas tree permits are available from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Permits can be purchased at the Dillon, Butte, Missoula and Lewistown field offices. Cost of the BLM permit is $5 per tree (limit of 3 trees per family) and includes a map of approved tree harvesting areas and conditions of use. Be aware that the permit, conditions of use, and maps are specific to the issuing office areas. Species vary upon location and may include Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, subalpine fir, and spruce. Permits must be purchased before trees may be cut.
Cutting your own Christmas tree can be fun but be prepared for winter conditions. The closest trees are usually the first to go so plan to do some walking through snow to get your tree. Make sure everyone in your party has warm clothes and boots. Pack emergency supplies, carry an appropriate map and leave word with friends or relatives of your planned destination. Take a vehicle equipped for winter conditions with 4-wheel drive, snow tires or chains and start early since winter days are shorter.
