Challis, Idaho - Recently, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Challis Field Office released 52 wild horse studs and nine mares treated with the fertility control vaccine Porcine Zona Pellucida back to the Challis Wild Horse Herd Management Area (HMA). Following the wild horse gather that occurred in early Nov., the BLM conducted an aerial census flight and has determined 115 wild horses remain on the range. A ratio of studs and mares will be released to the range to reach the low end of the Appropriate Management Level of 185. Additional mares will be released in January, following a fertility control booster vaccination.
Many of the wild horses removed from the range will be available for adoption at the BLM Challis Wild Horse Off-Range Corral Facility Jan. 31 - Feb. 1, 2020.
