BLM to open San Pedro thinning area for fuelwood harvest

The following press releases was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management on July 16, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

TAOS, N.M. - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is announcing that it will allow for additional fuelwood harvest in San Pedro, to minimize further residual heavy fuels from previous thinning activities. Due to public safety concerns during harvesting, this area will be closed to shooting from July 16-30, 2020. Fuelwood permits will be available online at https://forestproducts.blm.gov/. After receiving the permit, customers will need to contact the Taos BLM Forester at (575) 751-4752 for an access code to the site.

The initial BLM thinning project took place in the fall of 2018. It targeted heavy, dense forest fuels that accumulated, which helped reduce the immediate threat of wildland fire.

The San Pedro fuels reduction project location is on BLM lands on the south side of NM Highway 344, approximately 1 mile east of the intersection of NM Highway 14 and NM Highway 344.

BLM fire crews will burn slash piles from thinning operations during times of cooler temperatures and higher moisture. When work crews are on-site, the San Pedro area will be closed to target shooting to ensure public safety.

For more information, please contact Taos Forester, Elyssa Durán, at (575) 751-4752 or the Taos Field Office at (575) 758-8851.
