ARCATA, Calif., -- Fire crews from the Bureau of Land Management will be conducting a prescribed fire in the Lacks Creek Management Area near the community of Hoopa in Humboldt County from Tuesday, Dec. 15, through Thursday, Dec. 24. Smoke will be visible from residences along Bair and Stover roads, and there may be light residual smoke for one to two days after the piles are burned.
Personnel will be burning piles of brush, limbs and small trees, covering about five acres each day. The debris piles include small stacks built by hand crews, and larger piles pushed into place by heavy equipment. Ignition will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Burning will be conducted only when weather and fuel moistures allow for safe and successful burning.
The debris piles were created as part of the Lacks Creek Forest Health and Restoration Project, which is focused on improving vegetation diversity in the management area. The work is designed to benefit wildlife habitat.
The Lacks Creek Management Area includes about 8,600 acres of BLM-managed public lands located about 15 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. In addition to its wildlife habitat and watershed values, the area provides opportunities for recreation including mountain biking and camping.
