A 34-year-old man from Mexico has been sentenced to four years and four months in federal prison for illegal reentry into the U.S. after removal and an aggravated felony conviction.
Juan Diego Arteaga-Hernandez was sentenced Sept. 8 after pleading guilty May 11, according to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement news release. ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations detained Arteaga-Hernandez.
“ERO's work is critical to the enforcement of immigration laws against those who undermine the integrity of our immigration system,” Garrett Ripa, acting field office director of ERO Miami, said in the release. “ERO operations target public safety threats, just like this convicted criminal noncitizen, who repeatedly violated our nation's immigration laws and illegally re-entered the country after being previously removed.”
Arteaga-Hernandez was convicted in 2009 for the aggravated felony of possession with the intent to deliver heroin. He was convicted of “illegal reentry after deportation in 2015 and 2019,” and “was on federal supervised release for the 2019 conviction when he was arrested on this charge,” the release said.
The office of U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg and Assistant Attorney Mark Morgan prosecuted the case, according to the release.
