A $6.7 million grant to Matanuska-Susitna Borough in Alaska from the Economic Development Administration will promote tourism by creating new tourist infrastructure and facilities.
The program was funded through the American Rescue Plan funds, according to a Sept. 13 news release.
“President Biden recognizes the vital contribution the travel and tourism industry makes to the American economy,” Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said in the release. “This project will create new opportunities for businesses in Matanuska-Susitna Borough to tap into Alaska’s important tourism economy, expanding the potential for economic growth and resilience.”
The Economic Development Administration supports community-led economic development strategies designed to boost coronavirus recovery and response efforts, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Y. Castillo said in the release. The funds will support local businesses and increase tourism in the community by providing a critical new amenity needed by the region.
This project is supported by EDA's American Rescue Plan Economic Adjustment Assistance program, which offers American towns subsidies totaling $500 million for economic adjustment, the release said. The Economic Adjustment Assistance program is EDA's most adaptable program. Hundreds of U.S. communities get assistance from the program to develop creative solutions to local problems. The programs re-engage people in the workforce through construction or non-construction projects.
