North Manitou Island Deer Hunt 2006

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Aug. 4, 2006. It is reproduced in full below.

Empire, MI---Permits are now available for the NorthManitouIsland special deer hunt within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The season begins with the bow hunt on October 1 and ends after the final firearm hunt on November 5. Deer taken on this hunt do not count against the hunter’s mainland bag limit. Applications are now being accepted for:

Bow hunt October 1-15

Muzzleloader hunt October 16-22

Firearm Season 1 October 22-29

Firearm Season 2 October 29-November 5

If you think you would enjoy a late fall, wilderness hunting trip where you truly can “get away from it all," the NorthManitouIsland deer hunt might be just the experience you’re looking for. The island rangers report seeing more deer than in past years, including healthy, good-sized bucks. You and your hunting party would practically have the island to yourself, with no sounds but the natural quiet of the outdoors…and of course, the snort of that thirty-point buck!

Information about the hunts and island camping, as well as the permit application form, is available at the park’s web site. Applications are also available by calling Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore at 231-326-5134.
