Great Canal Cleanup - 2006 Rescheduled to Sunday, October 29

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Oct. 25, 2006. It is reproduced in full below.

Great Canal Cleanup Rescheduled to

Sunday October 29

Due to the current weather prediction this Saturday for steady rain, the Great Canal Cleanup - 2006 is moved to Sunday, October 29 when the weather forecast is for dryer conditions. In the past weeks, scores of volunteers have been making arrangements to participate, and their continued involvement is encouraged with this necessary date change and work plan.

Volunteers are asked to report on Sunday, October 29 at 8:30 a.m. to the National Park Visitor Center at 246 Market Street, Lowell. The work assignments are varied and will focus on enhancing the appearance of the walkways along the canals and river including: vegetation cutting, raking, graffiti removal, and painting. Volunteers are asked to wear clothes that can get dirty or painted, in layers appropriate for the day’s weather, and to bring their own work gloves. Work will not be taking place in the canals on Sunday as they will be re-filled later on Saturday.

More information about the cleanup is available on-line at www.nps.gov/lowe. Prospective volunteers can also call the National Park Service Volunteer Office at 978-275-1740.
