Memorial Day Programs at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and Presidential Library and Museum

On Monday, May 28 celebrate Memorial Day at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum.

From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Living History interpreters demonstrate historic crafts, games, music, school teaching, and other activities from life in 19th century West Branch. Guided living history tours of the historic buildings let you see West Branch through the eyes of an 1879 resident. Meet in the Visitor Center parking lot at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 12:00 a.m., and 1:00 a.m. for the guided living history tours. Ranger-guided Grounds Tours leave from the Visitor Center at 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Tour last about 45 minutes and include the Herbert Hoover Birthplace Cottage, Blacksmith Shop, Schoolhouse, and Friends Meetinghouse.

At 11:00 a.m., join a ranger-led Prairie Walk to explore the tallgrass prairie’s plant and animal life with a park ranger. Meet in front of the Presidential Library and Museum. The walk is one half-mile and lasts about one hour. Bring water, dress for the weather, and wear comfortable walking shoes. Hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, and insect repellent are also recommended. The walk will be cancelled in severe weather.

On Monday, May 28, Civil War Remembrance begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum with a discussion and concert of Civil War music by the acclaimed Marengo Civil War Band. Following the concert at 2:15 p.m., Civil War re-enactors from the 24th Iowa Infantry will display their equipment and discuss camp life and combat during the war. This concert and discussion will be repeated at 3:00 p.m., the demonstration will repeat at 3:45 p.m.

Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum are in West Branch, Iowa at exit 254 of I-80. Both are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time.
