Fort Union National Monument waives entrance fees this weekend
Fort Union National Monument including all National Park Service sites will offer free visitor admission this weekend. There will be no entrance fees on September 27th to celebrate National Public Lands Day and on September 28th to honor the country’s newest citizens.
“The fee free weekend provides a great opportunity for people to explore their public lands, which includes 391 other units of the National Park Service," said National Park Service Director Mary A. Bomar. “The men and women of the National Park Service are proud to preserve 84 million acres of this nation for the enjoyment of the American people."
Fort Union (1851-1891) was the largest frontier military post and supply center of the southwest. The National Park Service preserves and protects the Fort Union adobe ruins and the ruts of the Santa Fe National Historic Trail. Fort Union National Monument is located near Watrous, exit 366 off I-25, 8 miles on NM-161.
