LAS VEGAS - Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA), a unit of the National Park Service, announced today that it will begin using the micro-blogging service Twitter.com to release public information during incidents at the park. The media and public will be able to receive information by text message and e-mail through the free service.
"Twitter gives us a wonderful communications tool that is both efficient and cost-effective," said Andrew Muñoz, public affairs officer for Lake Mead NRA.
The park will continue to distribute press releases through its Lake Mead News distribution list hosted by Google Groups. Twitter will only be used to communicate breaking news and immediate incident updates.
While Twitter maybe used to announce park emergencies, Muñoz stressed that it should not be construed as an official emergency warning system.
