The National Park Service will host a Civil Rights film day on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the park's visitor center located at 600 N. 2nd Street, in Richmond, Virginia. The event will examine American history from the close of the Civil War to the modern Civil Rights Movement. Collectively, the selected films will shed light on the turbulent times during which Maggie L. Walker came of age and began her quest to improve the lives of African Americans. Each film will be followed by a ranger-led discussion.
The following is the film day schedule:
* 10 a.m. Aftershock: Beyond the Civil War. (90-minute documentary) Chronicles the Reconstruction Era and the rise of Jim Crow.
* 12 p.m. Scottsboro: An American Tragedy. (90-minute documentary) Examines the trial of nine African American teenagers accused of an infamous crime in depression-era Alabama.
* 2 p.m. The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. (112-minute feature film) Traces the story of a woman from her birth into slavery, to her role in the Civil Rights Movement. Stars Cicely Tyson.
