The National Park Service Know Your Park citizen science education program series continues with a presentation on The Pearl and the Gold: Sir Walter Raleigh's Lost Colony of Roanoke conducted by Dr. James Horn, Vice President of Research and Historical Interpretation at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
The hour-long program will take place at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site Visitor Center on Friday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the general public.
During the presentation, Dr. Horn will share his latest findings on the Lost Colonists that includes new information on their English backgrounds, why Raleigh sponsored John White's (the Lost Colony) expedition, and what happened after White returned to England leaving the colonists on Roanoke Island in the summer of 1587.
James Horn is the author of the best selling A Land As God Made It: Jamestown and the Birth of America and is currently completing a book on the Lost Colony, which will be published in early 2010. Dr. Horn is also known through various media interviews for his subject matter expertise in early colonial America.
The Know Your Park program series is designed to further connect the Outer Banks communities and residents with the rich natural world and cultural heritage of their neighboring National Park sites; Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Wright Brothers National Memorial and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.
