Seneca Falls - The public is invited to attend a special program in observance of Women's Equality Day on Aug. 26, 2009, at Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls. Park volunteer Helen Kirker, Clerk of the Farmington Meeting and President of the 1816 Farmington Quaker Meetinghouse Board of Trustees, will join park ranger Jamie Wolfe to discuss a "Quaker Perspective of Women's Equality Day". The program will be presented in the park's visitor center, 136 Fall Street, at 11:00 AM in the Guntzel Theater.
Women's Equality Day is a celebration of the ratification of the 19th Amendment that gave women in the United States the right to vote. It is perhaps the final right afforded to women based on the vision of equality expressed in 1848 by four Quaker women and Elizabeth Cady Stanton at the First Women's Rights Convention. The program will explore the Quaker perspective of the organizers and uncover why their religion helped them take this brave step toward equality. Women's Rights National Historical Park exists to commemorate and preserve the story of the First Women's Rights Convention and historical structures associated with it in Seneca Falls and Waterloo, New York. All public tours and programs are free and open to the public.
