Appalachian Craft Workshops Presented at Annual Big South Fork Storytelling Festival

Appalachian Craft Workshops Presented at Annual Big South Fork Storytelling Festival

Arts and crafts of the Appalachian region are being promoted through workshops and demonstrations held in conjunction with the “Haunting in the Hills" Storytelling Festival on Sept. 19, 2009, at the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Regional artists and crafters will instruct workshops. In addition, there will be demonstrations of quilting, flint knapping, pottery, chair caning, and woodturning. Activities begin at 10:00 a.m.

Following is a list of classes and times they are offered. Registration for classes is first come, first served and sign-up sheets will be located at the crafters’ tables. Class sizes are limited. Class times may change slightly at the instructor’s discretion.

Please note that for the safety of all, craft classes require adult supervision. Unless otherwise indicated, children must be at least 12 years of age to participate in a class.

Basket Making- 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Wood Carving- 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. (Age 16 and older.)

Soap Carving- 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. (Age 8 and up.)

Beginners Dulcimer Workshop- 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. Bring your dulcimer. Limited number of dulcimers available.

Pioneer Skills - Fire Building- Ongoing classes from10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Needle Felting- 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.

Chicken Scratch Embroidery - 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.

Candle Wicking Embroidery - 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m.

For further information please call the Bandy Creek Visitor Center at (423) 286-7275 from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. These classes are offered free of charge. Classes will be held rain or shine. All times listed are Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).
