Public Workshops on the Denali Park Road Vehicle Management Plan Scheduled for February 2010
In conjunction with the development of the Denali Park Road Vehicle Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), the National Park Service has released the Denali Park Road Workbook for public review and comment. This document provides background on the need for the EIS and preliminary concepts for possible alternatives.
The National Park Service is hosting a series of public workshops in February to discuss the preliminary concepts in the workbook, and to provide information on how the alternatives will be developed. All meetings will take place from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Members of the public are invited to discuss the workbook and to share their suggestions with park staff. The workshop dates and locations are:
• Denali National Park - Thursday, Feb. 11, Murie Science and Learning Center
• Fairbanks - Wednesday, Feb. 17, Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center
• Anchorage - Thursday, Feb. 18, Campbell Creek Science Center
The workbook and comment form are available online at www.nps.gov/dena/parkmgmt/roadvehmgteis.htm or www.parkplanning.nps.gov. Hard copies can be requested by calling the Superintendent’s Office at (907) 683-9581. Comments are due by March 1, 2010.
The transportation system has been an effective mechanism to manage vehicle use while providing for quality visitor opportunities along the Denali Park Road for many years. However, there is a growing demand for the park road experience. By evaluating the park road capacity now, the National Park Service will be able to more effectively manage the projected growth rate in the future. A reasonable range of alternatives will be developed for consideration that are responsive to significant issues identified through agency and public involvement. The goal of the Vehicle Management Plan is to provide a high quality experience for visitors while ensuring wilderness resource values, wildlife, other park resources, scenic values, and maintaining the unique character of the park road.
