HISTORIC LAKE MEAD OVERLOOK TO BE TEMPORARILY CLOSED MONDAY

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Jan. 10, 2011. It is reproduced in full below.

LAS VEGAS - The historic Lake Mead Overlook will be closed Monday morning as crews assess the area in preparation of an upgrade and restoration project set to begin in fall. The overlook is located off of Nevada state route 172 (Old U.S. Hwy 93) between U.S. 93 and Hoover Dam.

Originally constructed shortly after Hoover Dam was completed, the Lake Mead Overlook offers sweeping views of Boulder Basin and mountains to the north and west of Lake Mead. The area was constructed by Civilian Conservation Corps and incorporates many historic design features of the period. As many as 500 visitors stop at the overlook each day.

The overlook will be closed Monday, Jan. 24 beginning at 7 a.m. and will reopen no later than noon the same day.
