Homestead National Monument of America will uncover the "Quilt Discovery Experience" on Saturday, April 28, 2012. Wrap yourself up in the history of America as it is seen through the eyes of a quilter. Quilts are unique accounts of history. The Homestead "Quilt Discovery Experience" is made up of twenty two inspirational quilt block patterns located outside throughout the park. Take a walk through the past and discover how quilt making reflects who we are as a country. In 2012 our Nation is observing the 150th Anniversary of the Homestead Act of 1862. The Homestead "Quilt Discovery Experience" is another way in which the National Park Service is commemorating this significant event.
Thousands of quilt blocks and patterns have been created and sewn throughout the years. The quilt patterns on display in the "Quilt Discovery Experience" were used in the quilts made by homesteading women. Over a hundred and twenty years worth of popular patterns used between the Homestead Act being signed by Lincoln in 1862, and when the Act was repealed in 1986, will be displayed for all to see! Follow the trail to learn more about quilt making, and see how just a quilt, represents so much more.
