HOMESTEAD, Florida- Watch history come to life at Everglades National Park's third annual Vintage Day celebration on Saturday, March 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This year's theme, "The Battle to Preserve Paradise," explores the rich stories of the Everglades during the first half of the twentieth century. Park admission at the Homestead entrance will be waived for the day and all activities are free of charge for the whole family.
Chat with genteel members of the Florida Federation of Women's Clubs who led the early charge for protection, or listen to the stories of a bird warden trying to protect birds from plume hunters! Vintage Day will include a multitude of historical re-enactors as well as special presentations and tours. This is a great opportunity for young and old to interact with the characters that helped create Everglades National Park-one of the most biologically and culturally diverse parks in the world.
Participants will also be able to complete a special stamp collection commemorating the historical characters being portrayed at the event. After a day of fun, don't forget to cool off with an ice cream treat, compliments of the Everglades Association.
Fees and Directions:
This is a fee free day at the Homestead entrance of Everglades National Park. Fees will be collected at the Shark Valley park fee station.
Park at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center and take a scenic ride on the Homestead Trolley to Royal Palm, courtesy of the Everglades Association.
Visitors coming from the Miami area and points north should take the Florida Turnpike (Route 821) south until it ends merging with U.S. 1 at Florida City. Turn right at the first traffic light onto Palm Drive (State Road 9336/SW 344th St.) and follow the signs to the park. Visitors driving north from the Florida Keys should turn left on Palm Drive in Florida City and follow the signs to the park.
