GET TO KNOW LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA DURING NATIONAL PARK WEEK APRIL 20-28

BOULDER CITY, Nev. - The National Park Service is celebrating National Park Week April 20-28. This year's theme, "Did you know…" encourages visitors to learn unique aspects about the National Park Service's 401 parks. Below are some events happening at Lake Mead National Recreation Area during National Park Week.

Earth Day at Lake Mead April 20

Help park rangers keep Lake Mead National Recreation Area clean for Earth Day 9 a.m. to noon April 20. Volunteers will remove litter along the shoreline and desert. Rangers recommend volunteers wear long pants and close-toed shoes. Register by contacting Chris Pietrafeso at 702-293-8711 or e-mail us

Rage Triathlon April 20

Around 1,300 triathletes will run, bike and swim through Lake Mead National Recreation Area April 20 during the 10thannual Rage Triathlon. The swim portion of the race takes place at Boulder Beach. Then, athletes will bike along Lakeshore Drive and Northshore Road. The race concludes with a run along River Mountains Loop and Historic Railroad Tunnel trails. Visitors to Lake Mead may experience delays along Lakeshore Drive and Northshore Road. Drivers should use caution when passing cyclists. Cyclists are reminded that they must bike in single file on the roadways. Cycling abreast is not permitted within Lake Mead NRA. Free Admission to Lake Mead National Recreation Area April 22-26

All National Parks, including Lake Mead National Recreation Area, are offering free admission April 22-26. Fee-free days only apply to entrance fees. Fees for camping, lake use or use of concessions still apply. The next fee-free day will be Aug. 27, in celebration of the National Park Service Birthday.

Junior Ranger Day April 27

Families are invited to bring their kids out to Lake Mead National Recreation Area for the seventh annual Junior Ranger Day 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27 at the Boulder Beach Picnic Area. There will be free activities and demonstrations for kids of all ages. Each child will have the opportunity to earn a badge and be sworn in as a Junior Ranger. Touch live reptiles, operate a fire hose, watch K-9 demonstrations and more. Smokey Bear, Mojave Max and Coastie (a talking robot boat) will be there, too. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
