The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on May 2, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

Berlin, Maryland - The highly anticipated repair work on beach parking lots damaged during Hurricane Sandy has begun. Visitors to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge will observe representatives of Heard Construction, Inc reconstructing beach parking areas on the Virginia end of Assateague Island. Parking lots will be returned to an environmentally friendly crushed clamshell base. The contract, awarded through the Federal Highways Administration, designates a completion date of May 24, 2013 in time for a busy Memorial Day weekend. National Park Service staff in contact with the contractor say that work is progressing on schedule.

A limited amount of beach parking is available in the Refuge, and locals and visitors alike are taking opportunities to participate in photography, bird watching, and a stroll on the beach.
