MEDIA RAFT TRIP ALONG AMERICA’S NEWEST NATIONAL WATER TRAIL, JULY 3

Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell has designated the Black Canyon Water Trail, a portion of the Lower Colorado River that flows through Lake Mead National Recreation Area as a National Water Trail. Media are invited to raft down the river to experience why it was selected as one of America’s 16 water trails. The trail, which flows between Nevada and Arizona, is the first water trail in America’s Southwest and the first that traverses through a desert.

WHAT:

Raft down the Black Canyon Water Trail from the base of the Hoover Dam to Willow Beach. The journey will travel about 12 miles through steep canyons and alongside wilderness areas popular for wildlife. The group will pass active hot springs and historic areas associated with the construction of and research connected to Hoover Dam including the sauna cave, gauging stations, catwalks, trails and historic building foundations.

WHEN:

9:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 3

WHERE:

Hacienda Hotel Lobby, U.S. 93, Boulder City, NV 89005

WHY:

Celebrating America’s public lands and this new national recognition that highlights recreation opportunities in Nevada and Arizona are a unique way to recognize the 4th of July.

OPPORTUNITIES:

Media will be provided space to move about the raft to take photos or video along the water trail. Representatives from the National Park Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Lower Colorado River Water Trail Alliance and Black Canyon/Willow Beach River Adventures will be available for on-site interviews.
