Watrous, NM - Superintendent Charles Strickfaden announced today that beginning on Jan. 1, 2015 all park entrance fees for Fort Union National Monument (NM) will be permanently eliminated and that all visitors are now able to enter the park for free.
"We are continually analyzing our operations to ensure these national treasures are fully protected and that we are also following best business practices," said Superintendent Strickfaden. "After conducting a thorough cost-benefit analysis, we have determined it is in the best interest of both to the park and to the public to eliminate our entrance fee." In addition, the America the Beautiful - National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands passes will no longer be sold at the park. These passes can be purchased at: http://store.usgs.gov/pass/index.html. "We appreciate the great support we have in our local communities and encourage visitors to join us for the many numerous special events we have planed for 2015," said Strickfaden.
Fort Union (1851 - 1891) was the largest frontier military post and supply center for the Southwest. The National Park Service preserves and protects the historic Fort Union and remnants of the Santa Fe Trail. To visit the monument, take Exit 366 off I-25 at Watrous, NM onto State Hwy 161, 8 miles.
