Washington - The National Park Service (NPS) will hold a public meeting to discuss proposed improvements to pedestrian access from the North Michigan Park neighborhood to the Fort Totten Metrorail Station. The open house format meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2. Public comments will be accepted during the meeting.

About the Project
The Fort Totten-North Michigan Park Pedestrian Access Improvements Project and Environmental Assessment evaluates four alternatives as well as their potential impacts to the natural and historic setting of Fort Totten. The NPS has identified “Alternative 3: Direct Trail" as the preferred alternative.
This alternative calls for constructing a paved multi-use trail through the project area, which is part of the Civil War Defenses of Washington and is managed by Rock Creek Park. The design for the trail, which would connect Gallatin and Galloway Streets, NE, would account for existing topography to allow for sufficient sight lines and proper grade for universal accessibility. Existing unofficial social trails would be closed and restored with native vegetation. This alternative includes the option to incorporate lighting into the trail design.
