BOULDER CITY, Nevada -Is your boat ready for summer? Get a free vessel inspection at Lake Mead or Lake Mohave May 17 to find out.
The vessel inspections are courtesy exams that inform visitors about required safety equipment, proper registration and permits, proper lighting, signaling devices, marine sanitation devices and fire prevention components. As a convenience, safety equipment will be available for purchase at park marinas.
At Katherine Landing on Lake Mohave, visitors can receive a free safety inspection from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rangers will also have boating safety information and quagga mussel cleaning guides on hand near the park store and restaurant from 8 a.m. to noon.
At Boulder Harbor on Lake Mead, the National Park Service, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Nevada Department of Wildlife will be conducting free vessel inspections from 9 a.m. to noon.
Free vessel inspections will also be held at Hemenway Harbor on Lake Mead from 9 a.m. to noon May 22.
May 16 to 22 is National Safe Boating Week and the official launch of the 2015 North American Safe Boating Campaign.
"Preventative maintenance and pre-season mechanical checks are good ways to prevent mishaps and accidents," said Christie Vanover, park spokesperson. "People should also be alert to weather conditions, avoid alcohol while operating a boat and always wear a life jacket when in the water."
