Searching for Hopewell in Pickaway County

- Dr. Paul Pacheco

Date: Thursday, June 4th

Time: 7:00 PM

Location: Mound City Group Visitor Center

Fees: No Fees

Dr. Paul Pacheco will talk about the results of his first season and a half of archaeology at the Balthaser Home Site. The Balthaser Home Site is a small Hopewell settlement located west of Ashville, Ohio. It has been collected by landowner Don Balthaser for at least 30 years. His research at the site which is conducted by the SUNY Geneso (NY) and Bloomsburg University (PA) archaeology field schools, has included a magnetic survey, pit feature excavation, and trenching to look for evidence of structures. Some of the features contained a significant amount of pottery and mica. While his work on this site is still a work in process, he has already learned a lot about rural Hopewell life in central Ohio in the space between the great earthworks of Ross and Licking Counties.
