NPS SEEKS PUBLIC COMMENT ON PROPOSED SHORELINE WELLS AT KATHERINE LANDING

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on July 15, 2015. It is reproduced in full below.

BOULDER CITY, Nevada -The National Park Service is seeking public comment on the proposed replacement of a water intake barge with shoreline wells at Katherine Landing, within Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

The water intake barge is located in Sand Cove and is continuously in need of maintenance due to the infestation of quagga mussels. The National Park Service is proposing to remove it from service and take it off the lake.

Two new water production wells and an access road would be created on the sandy peninsula between Telephone Cove Arizona-South and Mohave Pass cove. The wells would be located close enough to the shore to infiltrate lake water, allowing the saturated soil to provide the first line of filtration that will eliminate quagga mussel infestation of the water supply system.

An environmental assessment is being prepared to analyze the effects of alternative methods of completing the project. Comments and recommendations concerning the scope of the environmental assessment, the issues it should cover, the alternatives to consider and other project-related concerns will be accepted through Aug. 17, 2015.

Comments may be submitted by U.S. Mail to Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Compliance Office, 601 Nevada Way, Boulder City, NV 89005 or via the internet at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome.cfm?projectID=55552.
