The Trail of Tears and the Road to Civil War

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Sept. 3, 2015. It is reproduced in full below.

Fort Oglethorpe, GA: Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a special hike at Moccasin Bend National Archeological District on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 2 pm. Participants should take the Manufacturer's Road exit off Highway 27 and drive west, following the "Special Event" signs to the Brown's Ferry Federal Road trailhead off Moccasin Bend Road.

This hike, along the Old Federal Road, explores how the Trail of Tears etched a path leading to the American Civil War.We tend to view our history as standalone tales, rarely seeing how one momentous event connects to the next. This program weaves the story of the connections from one great tragedy to another along a road that was instrumental in the outcomes of both events. As a reminder, please wear comfortable walking shoes and carry water.
