Grand Portage National Monument Will Hold Public Meeting to Solicit Public Comments on the First Draft of the Environmental Assessment (EA) for Historic Meadow Area
Grand Portage National Monument will post the first draft of the Historic Meadow Area Environmental Assessment for community and public review beginning on Monday, Oct. 19, 2015 through Nov. 19, 2015. The document will be available on the monument's website at www.nps.gov/grpo. There will be hard copies available at the Heritage Center as well for those who cannot access the internet.
On Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, all are cordially invited to a public meeting at the Heritage Center at 5:30 P.M., to discuss and comment on the first draft of the Environmental Assessment for the historic meadow area east of Grand Portage Creek. Once completed, the Environmental Assessment will guide us in future management of the meadow area for visitor and community use.
Grand Portage National Monument staff, in partnership with the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, held a public meeting earlier this year, on April 27, 2015. The purpose of that meeting was to introduce the planning process, and encourage input from Grand Portage community members, as well as the general public about how the park can best manage the historic meadow area.
Cultural Resource Chief, William Clayton, notes that, "Community participation at the meeting in April was very helpful in helping the park staff learn important perspectives on how the meadow was integral to community life for not only past, but current generations as well. Continued community and public input on the draft Environmental Assessment will be crucial as we work towards a final draft of the assessment. Public participation is welcome, and we encourage everyone to come and share thoughts and ideas as to how you would like to see the meadow area utilized."
The meeting will be informal. Park staff will be on hand to talk with folks, share information, and accept comments, suggestions, and concerns from all who attend.
