Petrified Forest National Park encourages all 4th graders to visit the park for free this year as part of the Every Kid in a Park program. The Every Kid in a Park pass gives 4th grade students, and those accompanying them, free access to more than 2,000 federally managed lands and waters. The National Park Foundation, official charity of America’s national parks, awarded Petrified Forest National Park a field trip grant to further support the Every Kid in a Park program for the 2016-2017 school year. The grant is part of the Foundation’s Open Outdoors for Kids program.
In addition, Petrified Forest National Park welcomes all 4th grade students for a second year to participate in citizen science through the Student Phenology for Outdoor Citizens (SPOC) program.
4th grade classes visiting the park for SPOC will receive:
- full reimbursement of travel costs to the park
- healthy snacks
- a ranger led hike along the one mile Rim Trail overlooking The Painted Desert.
During the hike students will use I-pads to record natural history observations and write nature journals.
All 4th grade classes can apply for this program; Title 1 and BIE schools are especially encouraged to participate. For more information and to download the grant application form, visit:
