Tornado Relief at Andersonville National Historic Site
National Prisoner of War Museum new donation location
ANDERSONVILLE, Georgia - Andersonville National Historic Site is pleased to announce that it is a new drop off location for items to aid tornado victims with two donation boxes set up in the lobby of the National Prisoner of War museum.
On Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, an EF-3 tornado swept across near-by Dougherty, Worth and Turner counties. Thousands of residents of those counties are without power, homes, and basic supplies. During the next two weeks, Andersonville National Historic Site will serve as a drop off location. The items collected will then be distributed throughout the affected areas.
Items needed are as follows:
* Any food items that do not need to be cooked or refrigerated
* Toiletry supplies (i.e. tooth brushes, tooth paste, hand sanitizer, dry shampoo, soap, etc.)
* Paper products
* Bath towels, wash cloths, blankets
* Baby items (i.e. dippers, wipes, food)
* Cleaning supplies
* Packing supplies
* Pet supplies
* First Aid kits
* Flashlights and batteries of all sizes
* Water
The last day to drop off donations is Feb. 11, 2017.
“When natural disasters strike, it's inspiring to see communities come together to help," stated Acting Superintendent Lisa McInnis. “Our hearts go out to the victims of these devastating tornadoes. Out of distressing situations like these comes another opportunity for extraordinary humanitarianism."
Andersonville National Historic Site is located 10 miles south of Oglethorpe, GA and 10 miles northeast of Americus, GA on Georgia Highway 49. The national park features the National Prisoner of War Museum, Andersonville National Cemetery and the site of the historic Civil War prison, Camp Sumter. Andersonville National Historic Site is the only national park within the National Park System to serve as a memorial to all American prisoners of war. Park grounds are open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The National Prisoner of War Museum is open 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., daily. Admission is free.
