Citizen Scientists Highlighted in Fourteenth Annual New River Gorge Wildflower Weekend April 28 – 30, 2017

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on April 21, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Glen Jean, WV - See what is in parks to be discovered during New River Gorge Wildflower Weekend! Free guided nature hikes, art demonstrations, and exhibits highlight the glories of the season at New River Gorge National River, Tamarack, and the West Virginia state parks of Babcock, Carnifex Ferry Battlefield, Hawks Nest, Pipestem Resort, and Twin Falls Resort. The event schedule is available online at https://www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/wildflower-weekend.htm. Bring water and wear sturdy walking shoes for guided walks. Other useful tools are binoculars, a hand lens, camera, field guides, and smart devices pre-loaded with nature apps.#NRGWFW

This year’s event includes an exciting new citizen scientist element, where anyone can contribute their nature observations. Use the free I-Naturalist app from a smart device to document and share news of the natural world around us as a citizen scientist. These observations can help us realize how we are not only observers of the natural world, but fellow inhabitants who can contribute to a healthy earth. Join us for this celebration of springtime in Appalachia!
