Berlin, MD - The National Park Service (NPS) announced today that the Abbreviated Final General Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (GMP/EIS) for Assateague Island National Seashore is available on the NPS Planning, Environmental and Public Comment website at

“The General Management Plan (GMP) will guide Assateague Island National Seashore managers for the next 15 to 20 years in protecting the Seashore's natural and cultural features," said Seashore Superintendent Deborah Darden. “The GMP sets the stage for managers to respond to island changes likely to occur due to natural processes, climate change, and sea level rise."
Over the past few years, the public has participated in the General Management Planning process through public meetings, formal and informal consultation, newsletters, and resources posted on the internet. In early 2016, the Draft GMP/EIS was available for public review for 90 days. The Abbreviated Final GMP/EIS includes an analysis of those comments received on the Draft GMP/EIS. The abbreviated document reflects responses to comments and minor editorial changes. Alternative 3 remains the NPS preferred alternative. The Abbreviated Final GMP/EIS format provides a simple, brief document outlining future protection of the seashore and provisions for the visitor experience.
