Berlin, Maryland - T3L, a chestnut mare popularly known as “Miss T", was humanely euthanized Tuesday afternoon when she was discovered unable to stand. At 31, she was one of the oldest mares on the island. She lived most of her life in the developed area, primarily in the vicinity of the bayside campground. She had foaled three times earlier in life, and had one second-generation descendent.
There was no indication that T3L’s condition was anything other than a natural occurrence typical of a horse reaching the end of life. The fact that the Assateague horses are managed as a wildlife population is what makes them so interesting and special. The National Park Service is committed to protecting the Assateague horses now and forever so they remain a treasured part of the Assateague experience.
