BAR HARBOR, MAINE - The Acadia National Park Service Sign Shop Volunteers are the Northeast Region’s recipients of the George and Helen Hartzog Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in the Group Category for 2017. Each year the National Park Service recognizes exceptional efforts in volunteer management and service.
“We are very honored and grateful to the ‘Sign Shop Volunteers’ who are best known for their exceptional carriage road signage," said Superintendent Kevin Schneider. “This team of dedicated and passionate volunteers have donated their most precious resource, their time, toward handcrafting wooden signs to help every visitor enjoy their park."
Acadia’s wooden carved signs have been beautifully hand crafted by a team of committed volunteers for the past twenty years. These Sign Shop Volunteers donate their time to creating signs that help visitors enjoy and safely navigate the park. This team of 20 volunteers donate over 1,000 hours of their time each year. Alan Farnsworth and Stevie Allison in the Facility Management Division as well as Dianna McKeage with the Volunteer Program and Dana Petersen with Friends of Acadia support these volunteers in whatever the team needs to get the job done.
The George and Helen Hartzog Awards for Outstanding Service were established in 2002 in partnership with the National Park Foundation through a generous donation from the Hartzogs to recognize outstanding volunteers, volunteer managers, and volunteer programming in the categories of individual, group, youth, youth group, and enduring service.
