Grants, NM: Due to prolonged hot, dry weather and to reduce the risk of human caused fires at El Malpais and El Morro National Monuments, park officials will be implementing Stage II fire restrictions beginning Friday, May 4, 2018.
Beginning at 8 am on Friday, May 4 the following acts will be prohibited throughout El Malpais and El Morro National Monuments:
* Setting, building, maintaining, attending, or using fires of any kind, including wood and charcoal campfires within developed campgrounds or picnic areas, or permanently improved places of habitation. Stoves fueled by petroleum or Liquid Propane Gas (LPG) fuels are allowed.
* Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle.
* Possessing or using any kind of fireworks or other pyrotechnic devices (Prohibited at all times).
These restrictions will be enforced until rescinded by Superintendent Mitzi Frank. Violation of the above, prohibited acts is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 and/or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
