Save a Life at Chickamauga: Blood Drive at the Battlefield

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on July 3, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On Thursday, July 26, from 1:30 pm - 6 pm, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host a blood drive at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center, 3370 LaFayette Road, Fort Oglethorpe, GA. This blood drive is supported by Blood Assurance.

Throughout the Battle of Chickamauga, surgeons and hospital stewards frantically worked to save the lives of wounded soldiers. Large field hospitals were quickly established in the area. Of the hospitals, Solon Hyde of the 17th Ohio Infantry recalled, “It seemed as if nature was extending her hands to us in the hour of our extremity." Hyde was a hospital steward, and he diligently worked to save the lives of people he did not even know. This summer, you too can carry on Solon Hyde’s legacy and help save the life of another by donating blood to support Chattanooga area blood banks. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, contact Stacy Payne at stacy_s_payne@nps.gov or by calling
