National Park Service Announcement: Jaite Paper Mill Site Administrative Record File Available

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on March 4, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Brecksville, Ohio -The Administrative Record File for a Time-Critical Removal Action at the Jaite Paper Mill Site, located in Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP), is available to the public for review.

The site has been contaminated by hazardous substances as the result of historic operations at the Jaite Paper Mill. The National Park Service (NPS) determined that an engineered slope stabilization along a portion of the site adjacent to Cuyahoga River was necessary to abate or significantly reduce human and ecological exposure to the release of hazardous substances from the site to the river, due to recent extreme weather conditions.

The public is encouraged to review the Administrative Record File at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 South High Street Akron, Ohio 44326. The library’s hours of operation are Monday - Thursday 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. - p.m., and Sunday 1 - 5 p.m.

The Administrative Record File includes the documents that form the basis for NPS’s selection of a Time Critical Removal Action at this Site. Additional documents will be added to the Administrative Record File in accordance with the National Contingency Plan, 40 C.F.R. Part 300, and may include, but are not limited to, additional finalized technical documents, comments submitted by interested persons, and NPS responses to significant comments.

Comments on the Administrative Record File should be submitted in writing to Veronica Dickerson, National Park Service, 15610 Vaughn Road, Brecksville, Ohio 44141. Dickerson may be reached at 440-665-0915, Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Questions regarding the Akron-Summit library may be directed to Valerie Sherman at 330-643-9079.

Jaite Paper Mill was constructed in 1905, operated continually until 1984, and became part of CVNP in 1985. It produced paper bags for flour, cement, and fertilizer; rope, kraft paper, and corrugated boxes. Since the mill’s demolition in 2006, the National Park Service has conducted numerous environmental assessments to evaluate the contaminants at the site.

CVNP encompasses 33,000 acres along the Cuyahoga River between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. Managed by the National Park Service, CVNP combines cultural, historical, recreational, and natural activities in one setting. For more information visit www.nps.gov/cuva or call 330-657-2752.
