Congratulations to the Summer 2019 Isle Royale Artists-in-Residence

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on March 28, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

HOUGHTON, MICH - Isle Royale National Park is proud to announce the summer 2019 artists-in-residence. This year’s selections include Alex Braidwood (Ames, IA, Sound Ecology), Nathan Clark, (Vashon, WA, Fiber & Mixed Media) and Cecil Howell (Brooklyn, NY, Collage), along with four alternates, Harlan Butt (Denton, TX, Metalsmith), Elizabeth Rose (Philadelphia, PA, Printmaking), Nicole Simpkins (Minneapolis, MN, Mixed Media), and Elizabeth Ward (San Antonio, TX, Mixed Media). One past artist-in-residence, Keith Taylor (Ann Arbor, MI, Poetry & Prose, 1991), will be returning to assist with the Isle Royale Teen Artist Exploration in July.

Isle Royale received 130 applications for the 2019 program. Artists in many mediums displayed professionalism, creativity, and a mix of traditional and modern art styles. The jury’s selections were based on artistic integrity, creativity, ability to reside in a wilderness environment, and how an artist would relate and interpret the park through their work.

The Isle Royale Artist-in-Residence Program provides artists the opportunity to become part of a long-established tradition of interpreting national parks through art. The program is open to artists whose work can be inspired by the park's unique character, and it offers writers, composers, and all visual and performing artists the opportunity to capture the moods and magic of Isle Royale through their particular art form.

The program is co-sponsored by Isle Royale National Park, Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association, and the Copper Country Community Arts Council. More information can be found on our website, www.nps.gov/isro/getinvolved/artist-in-residence.
