Lake Mead to Conduct Traffic Safety Patrols, March 30

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on March 29, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

BOULDER CITY, Nevada -The National Park Service and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department will conduct traffic safety enforcement patrols March 30 at Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

“The park has recently conducted a road hazard analysis on Northshore Road, which confirmed that we have issues with speed and reckless behavior that heavily contribute to accident rates," said Adam Kelsey, chief ranger. “This time of year, our visitation spikes on our roads, and that’s why we are targeting this time to emphasize speed compliance."

In 2018, there were around 175 motor vehicle accidents in the park, three of which resulted in fatalities.

“This saturation patrol is aimed at increasing the safety of our visitors by stopping the actions of violators, as well as educating them on the dangers associated with these behaviors," said Kelsey.

Penalties for violating traffic laws can reach up to $5,000 and six months in jail.
