Park Day volunteers needed

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on April 9, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Vicksburg, MS: Vicksburg National Military Park in partnership with the Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park and Campaign, will host a “Park Day" volunteer event on Saturday, April 13, 2019 from 8am to 12pm. Volunteers will help on various tasks to help prepare the park for the busy summer season. Volunteers should arrive at the visitor center no later than 8am. Work will conclude by noon.

This year, volunteers will be working on several high-visibility projects including gardening and exterior work at the Shirley House and other projects throughout the park. Children are welcome to help if accompanied by an adult. All personal protective equipment will be provided, but volunteers are asked to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.

“We have been hosting a Park Day event for the last 10 years," said Bess Averett, Executive Director of the Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park and Campaign. “Each year gets more and more successful, and we have been honored to welcome close to 100 volunteers in previous years. This is a great opportunity for our local community to come support Vicksburg’s own national park."

“The work performed on Park Day, and all support provided by volunteers, is incredibly impactful," said Superintendent Bill Justice. “These volunteer projects will have a direct benefit to our visitors, and help us provide the best experience possible."

This Volunteer Day is held to support Park Day, a nationwide day of public service sponsored by the American Battlefield Trust to support volunteerism in historic sites across the nation. The first 75 volunteers will get a free T-shirt and lunch will be provided by the Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park and Campaign.

Individuals and organized groups are welcome. To register in advance, please contact Rose Rains at 601-630-6021 or e-mail us.
